Why you should use a pet groomer

March 29, 2021

There are a lot of costs to consider before adopting a pet, and buying a pet without checking if you can afford it isn’t ideal for you or your new furry friend. From insurance to pet food, your monthly outgoings will significantly increase. But one cost that often gets forgotten about is pet grooming.

While this seems like an unnecessary luxury, it’s actually pretty important, especially if you’re looking to add a fluffy dog to your family.

In this guide, we will highlight the reasons why you should use a pet groomer so you can budget for this in your initial discussions.

It keeps them clean

Obviously, the major benefit of using a pet groomer is to keep your pet clean. Depending on the type of dog you are looking for, they may need regular bathing after rolling around in mud while out on a walk. Dog hair tends to hold dirt, pollen and smells – none of which you’ll want spreading around the house.

Pet groomers like the experts at exceptionalpets.com use gentle shampoos and soaps to maintain your pet’s natural oils that keep their coat shiny and healthy while also giving them a good clean. They’ll also be able to brush out any knots and trim back their fringes when needed.

It exposes hidden skin conditions

If your dog’s hair is too thick or you leave it to go matted, skin conditions can easily go unnoticed. Fur can hide growths, tumors, or other skin conditions that, unless caught early on, could potentially be fatal.

As our pets play outdoors, they can also easily get objects caught in their fur like stones, hooks, glass, or metal. These have the possibility of creating a bed for bacteria and fungus to grow, neither of which will be particularly comfortable for them.

It prevents pain and discomfort

Along with matted fur being uncomfortable for your pet, overgrown toenails can also cause pain and discomfort. When the toenails become too long, they curl back and can pierce into the footpad. Hair on the paws can also get caught between the pads if it’s too long, which essentially will feel like walking on rocks for your poor pup.

It promotes fresh growth

To keep your pet happy and healthy, their skins need to be able to breathe. Double-coated breeds have an under and overcoat, with the undercoat being shed in the warmer months. Removing the buildup of undercoat fur allows the skin to breathe while also promoting new coat growth. This is particularly important for short-coated breeds.

It’s helpful in emergencies

Though it’s difficult to think about, there may come a time when your pet escapes or gets lost and can’t find its way home. Well-groomed pets are more often reported than those that have overgrown, uncared for fur. Signs of neglect suggest the pet is already a stray. Maintaining your pet’s appearance will help give the impression they are cared for and will be sorely missed.

There are lots of reasons why you should use a pet groomer, with almost all of them relating to the happiness and wellbeing of your pet. If you feel you can afford grooming fees, then now is the time to welcome a new furry friend into your home.
