How to: Visiting the Pumpkin Patch for the First Time

October 6, 2020

The season for sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes, and pumpkin patches is finally here. While most of us enjoy our favorite pastime of pumpkin picking each year, others are looking forward to it for the first time. A lot of pumpkin patches also offer other activities such as a petting zoo or corn maze, so make sure you do your research and look at their website to make sure you aren’t missing out on any of the fun. Here are some other tips to help you and your family have fun on your first pumpkin patch experience.

Beat the crowd

If you don’t want to be around too many people, the best time to go to a pumpkin patch is during the week when you know other kids are in school and parents are working. This plan works if you’ve got toddlers and are looking for an activity to enjoy during the week. If you’ve got older kids and weekends seem to be the only days that you can make time for the trip, try to arrive as soon as the patch opens to avoid the crowds. Another great time to go is earlier in the season when it’s further away from Halloween. The closer to Halloween, the crazier the crowds seem to get.

Wear the right attire

Pumpkin patches are farms, so dirt is going to be there and it’s going to be everywhere. Wear shoes and outdoor clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. If you need some ideas, Jack Wolfskin outdoor clothing has the proper attire for all kinds of weather no matter where you are. During the day, it’s always a good idea to wear sunscreen since you don’t know how long you’ll be out in the sun. And as with any other time, hand sanitizers should always be with you so you can clean your hands after pumpkin picking or if your little ones decide to visit the petting zoo. If you have a new addition to the family and would like to take your baby on their first pumpkin patch experience, carrying them in a sling or carrier is a more comfortable option. Ergobaby’s best carriers have a way of being worn a couple different ways to keep you and your baby safe, comfy and cozy while you’re walking around the farm. You can wear a Halloween costume if you like, but it’s not too practical.

Have cash on hand

Some pumpkin patches may not have a way to accept credit and debit cards, so having some extra cash on hand is a great way to ensure you have a way to pay for food, activities, and of course, your pumpkins. Speaking of cash, if you’re wondering about ways to save, admission fees tend to be cheaper during the week and earlier in the day. If you think your kids will want to visit the pumpkin patch more than once, it may also be cheaper to buy a season pass if they offer one.

Depending on which pumpkin patch you visit, you will have a variety of things to do as far as fun activities. Aside from a petting zoo and corn maze, other activities offered may include wagon rides, performances, bounce houses and slides, corn pits, and even paintball. So grab the family and head out to what could possibly be a new family tradition and have fun!
