How to prepare for the first day of school

October 9, 2020

Getting kids for school is an uphill task especially if it’s the first day of the term. One can easily leave out some essentials and this wouldn’t be a good way to get started. It helps if you get all supplies that the kids will need on the first day of school from Milly & Henry. It’s also very important to have a packing checklist so that you don’t leave out any school essentials. Being well prepared goes a long way in easing your anxiety that would otherwise cause you to be forgetful.

Preparing for the first day of school

Usually, most schools provide parents with a list of all the things that they’ll need to bring for the first day of school. Having your list helps too. Here are the main things that you should prepare for your little one on their first day of school:

  • Backpack

Ensure that the backpack is in the right size. It shouldn’t be too large or too small.

It will be used to pack the day’s necessities inside. The teachers may also pack some homework or notices to parents.

  • Lunch or snacks

There are plenty of food options that you can choose from. Just make sure that it’s something your child enjoys eating otherwise they’ll go hungry at school.

Make sure that the food you pack is in adherence to the school’s food policy.

  • Milk or juice

If the school doesn’t provide any of these beverages, make sure that you pack them alongside other meals and snacks.

  • Water bottle

Kids play too much so at some point they’re going to get thirsty. Bringing water to school ensures that they stay hydrated all through.

If your child still uses a sippy cup, they can use it to bring water to school. If you decide to pack the water in a bottle, ensure that it’s spill-proof and that the child can open it on her own.

  • Extra set of clothes

Kids aren’t very keen on cleanliness. It would be wise to pack an extra set of clothes that they can change into. Don’t forget to add an extra pair of socks and underwear.

Pay attention to the weather so that you can also pack the right seasonal outerwear. If it’s cold, pack a jacket. If it’s sunny, pack a hat and sunscreen.

  • Diapers and wipes

It’s normal for some kids to join school before they’re properly potty-trained. If this is the case for you, you should send a plentiful stash of diapers, wipes, and diaper cream.

  • Necessary medication

If their classroom isn’t equipped with cots, it’s highly likely that you’ll be asked to bring a mat, sheet, and blanket. Ask before the D-Day and prepare accordingly.

Also, if your child has a favorite stuffed animal or any other comfort item, bring it along to help erase preschool jitters.

  • Naptime essentials

Does your child have allergies or does he need daily medication? Either way, ensure that you alert his teacher ahead of time.

Conclusion

The first day of school might be tough but we promise you – it gets better with time. If the school has loving and nurturing teachers who provide the right environment for the kids, they’ll adjust so quickly. In no time your child will be looking forward to going to school to interact with his peers.
