Festive Inspiration: Top Tips for Decorating for the Holidays

November 23, 2020

Festive decorating can be very exciting, no matter how big or small you intend to go. Aside from the obvious additions like a festive tree, there are many ways to improve your decorating for the holiday season and add key features to create a more seasonal home you and the family can enjoy spending time in.

Below are some top tips for seasonal decorating.

  • Switch Up Your Cushion Covers

Introduce new festive patterns and colors to your couch cushions, or your decorative bed pillows, by changing your cushion covers for the season. You can purchase new covers in festive themes or even make your own with your family. All you need is a blank cushion cover and fabric paint, pens, or thread to create your own design and make a family activity out of it!

  • Change Your Houseplants or Flowers

As much greenery and festive color as you can introduce into your home, the better, and this can easily be done with plants and flowers. You may want to get some new Christmas-related plants or flowers for the season, such as a Poinsettia (or a few!). Any festive colored floral arrangements will do, too, with plenty of greens and reds placed around the home.

  • Create the Perfect Fireplace Area

Nothing says Christmas more than a cozy fire arrangement. Having a mantel surround, like the different types found at stonewoods.co.uk, can help for displaying garlands, candles, stockings and more, to arrange the perfect festive display. You may also want to sit around a roaring fire whilst opening your presents or enjoying a glass of something, so making the perfect fireplace area is a great addition to your festive décor.

  • Introduce Seasonal Scents

Fill your home with the scents of the holiday to create a more inviting feel. Scented candles and incense can help to create the right atmosphere, like cinnamon, real-tree smell, or other scents, which your family most associates with the festive time of year. Candles in festive colors like red, as well as the right scents, can perfectly create a warm and pleasant mood, too.

  • Use Garlands to Drape Around the Home

Garlands are easy to use around the home and add a festive touch to anything. Wrap around your staircase handrail, drape over your picture frames on the wall, hang over the mantelpiece, or thread through the back of your dining chairs — anything to add more festive color and greenery!

  • Overload on Soft Furnishings

Christmas and the holidays are about being comfortable and cozy, and this can more easily be achieved with plenty of blankets, pillows, and soft furnishings. Be sure to kit out your couches, chairs, and beds with cozy items, as well as thinking about comfortable footstools and rugs to layer up the room.

  • Table Dressing

Whether it’s your main dining table, a side table, or your coffee table, dressing your table is an absolute must for the season. Pack your centerpiece with floral arrangements and festive candles, or add candles and Christmas-colored placemats or coasters to any table you can find!

Whatever you choose to do with your home this festive season, have fun!
