Summer Tips to Help with the Heat and Help You Stay Safe

August 19, 2020

Summer is loved for its heatwaves, sun, and plenty of light, but as the climate changes, a lot of us can really feel the effects. There are several issues that can crop up when someone has an aversion to heat, such as migraines, dehydration, sunstroke, or heat stroke, to name a few, so while it is great to enjoy the summer weather, it is also important to look after ourselves too.

For those who struggle with the heat and want to stay safe, this piece is for you!

Choose Your Summer Fabrics Wisely

What materials your clothes are made from can make all the difference when it comes to regulating your temperature, and being too warm is no joke! There are certain breathable fabrics that are excellent to wear in summer to keep cool and make the heat more bearable without having to sit out in the shade.

Hydrate, Hydrate and Then Hydrate

If there is one thing heat is great at, it is making us sweat. Sweating can leave the body dehydrated, especially if it sweats at a faster rate than water is being replenished. This means it is absolutely vital to keep that water intake up, even when you might not feel thirsty!

Do not opt for caffeinated drinks as these act as a diuretic, which can encourage dehydration further.

Get Wet on the Outside

There is a good reason we all take a dip in the sea or the pool on a hot day, and this is because it keeps our core body temperature down. This is a great option for the mornings and the evenings when the heat is still just a little above our comfort zone.

Stay Inside at Peak Times

From around 10 am to 4 pm, the heat reaches its peak, and in countries such as Australia, it could be dangerous for some to even go outside in it. This is when it is best to stay indoors. Fans can work alright to cool us down, but air conditioning units are much more effective and a great investment. For those who know a heatwave is coming, consider getting an air conditioning servicing Adelaide company to come and take a look to make sure you are prepared for when the heat hits. This way, there will not be any unwelcome surprises such as the air con not working when you need it the most!

Use Sunscreen When Leaving the House

This should be a given in all heat, but when it comes to the higher temperatures, it can be extremely dangerous to be out and about without any sunblock on. Becoming burnt can pose many health risks, and when severe, can provoke an infection and blood loss, both of which could be devastating. Sunscreen can help keep a person cooler in the heat, but also consider extras such as a hat to keep the sun off the face and head, and keep an eye out for symptoms of any heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and also heat cramps.
