Reducing back pain with massage

November 23, 2021

Back pain is a common reason why people seek out massage therapists. The pain can be truly debilitating at times, and most of us will experience back pain at some point in life.

When not treated, back pain can stop you from living your fullest life, as it can prevent you from doing so many different things.

If you’ve got an official diagnosis for your back pain – for example, sciatica, muscle sprains, or disc bulges, a therapist can use specific techniques to alleviate the symptoms.

Common causes of back pain

Those that don’t have an official diagnosis can still work to identify a cause.

Common causes of back pain include bad posture and prolonged sitting or inactivity. However, there are more serious causes like whiplash, trauma, and poor lifting technique, which can play a part.

The most common cause of back pain is a mechanical issue. Usually, the joints in the spine aren’t functioning or working as they should.

Massage for back pain

Massage is often a holistic therapy, which means a masseuse will focus on healing the whole body and mind, rather than just trying to help with back pain.

That said, it can be hugely effective for pain in the lower back.

Before your treatment, you’ll likely need to provide the therapist with some information about the pain, any diagnoses you’ve received, and any medications you’re taking. You may also be asked some questions to help the therapist understand what may have happened in the past to cause the pain.

They’ll then create a treatment plan. This may be a single massage session or a structured schedule of different treatments over some time.

Massage can include blood flow and oxygen in the body, loosen muscles, and improve posture. All of this can then go a long way to treating back pain.

Different temperatures may also be used during the treatment to help with inflammation or tension.

Releasing toxins

Through massage, pockets of waste or toxins can be dislodged and released from the soft tissue. When we’re under stress in day-to-day life, our bodies can become less efficient at removing these waste packages, which is where massage can help.

The final stage of the process is to stay hydrated after a massage, to flush away the toxins that have been pushed out through the session.

Getting started

If you’ve already tried medication and physio, your doctor may suggest body massage to alleviate back pain. Alternatively, you can search for your own massage therapist in Potters Bar. Self-care has become a total buzzphrase in recent years – and for good reason. So, if you’re feeling stressed or tense, your body likely is too. Take time out to have a massage treatment and see just how much better you feel after.

It’s important to remember that you may have residual soreness after your treatment. A few gentle stretches, fluids, and taking it easier should help the benefits of your massage kick in and stick around for longer.
