How Exercise Improves Brain Function

January 7, 2020

Nothing can be worse than an ideal brain. There is an old saying that says that a healthy mind lives in a healthy body. That is why we need to keep ourselves healthy. If the body feels good, then our mind will be less stressed. One tends to feel less depressed or anxious- the perks of modern life. Following a regular exercise routine is the best way to train one’s mind and keep it healthy.

There is no age to start exercising. If you are not too young, you can still involve yourself in some physical activity. Being active is one of the most important things as you start reaching a certain age. The brain functioning becomes slow, and the memory starts compromising. Remembering simple things starts looking like a big task. That is when one should consider getting started on regular aerobic exercises like running, biking, and swimming. These exercises help in preserving the brain cells and also fosters the growth of new ones. Studies have shown that individuals with long-term and moderate physical activities have an increase in the volume of the hippocampus. Hippocampus is that area of the brain that helps with forming long-term memories. Older adults who have Alzheimer disease tend to have the hippocampus affected. Exercising regularly helps to strengthen the hippocampus, which will be helpful in the long run, a bit of advice that comes from experts like Garry Y Itkin.

Exercise is known to be great for your memory. Exercise helps to reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, and stimulates the growth of brain cells, new blood vessels in the brain, and even helping new brain cells to survive. When you work out regularly, you will see the effect it has on your mood. It will help lift your mood and also help one to fall asleep.

So, How To Get Started?

However, when you have reached a certain age, and you decide to start exercising, then there are certain things that you should keep in mind. To begin with, see a medical practitioner so that they can assess your fitness level and tell you when you should start exercising and how much of it should you be getting every day.

Not all exercises are suitable for everyone. Keeping that in mind, try and balance your exercise regime. Aerobic activities like biking, swimming, and walking can be teamed with some strength training and balance exercises like Tai Chi or Yoga. Strength training and some functional stretching exercises are counted as mood enhancers, improving concentration as well as decision-making skills. Apart from all that, it keeps one strong, flexible, and on the feet as one age. Before starting exercising, however, begin with some warm-up.

Keeping a note of the progress is necessary too as you would know how much good exercise is doing to you. You would also know the benefits that you are getting and whether it is making you feel better than how you usually stay.

To achieve results, exercise should be teamed with a balanced diet. You need to give your body some fuel to run on and to get through all that strenuous exercises. Have food that is rich in fiber, leafy vegetables, fruits, beans, tofu, and fish.

As much as it is essential to have a heart that helps pump blood throughout your body, you would also need a brain that works fine. The mind is the seat not only for our memories, but it also helps us to rationalize, think, and make our body function as a clock. It is what makes us feel, and helps us in going on with a perfect life.

The consequences of lacking physical activity or exercise can be detrimental to one’s physical well-being. It can not only affect one’s brain but also lead to heart disease and life-threatening diseases like cancer. The lack of proper exercise is also associated with Type II Diabetes Mellitus, weight gain, and obesity.
