A Guide to CBD: What It Is and How It Could Benefit You

March 2, 2021

There has been a huge amount of talk in the media and online about CBD recently, but you may have been left wondering what it is. If you want to know more about CBD and its benefits, here is a brief guide to answer any questions you may have.

So, What Exactly Is CBD?

Cannabidiol, more commonly known simply as CBD, is a cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant. In plain English, this means that it’s a chemical compound that comes from a plant. It can derive from both the marijuana plant and the hemp plant and has been referred to as marijuana’s “straight-edged” cousin.

CBD is a natural product that can be ingested in a variety of forms: oil, chewable gummies, capsules, body lotions, or even vape juice for e-cigarettes.

Is It Legal?

There is no straightforward answer to this question really, as rules differ from country to country and state to state. In most states, the answer is yes, as long as it derives from the hemp plant rather than marijuana. Marijuana-derived CBD is not legal where marijuana is illegal, and a few states take a particularly hard line on this.

However, if you’ve seen CBD-infused products on sale in stores near you, the chances are that it is on sale legitimately, and you can purchase and use it without worry.

Does It Get You High?

No! CBD is not psychoactive. THC is the psychoactive part of a cannabis plant—that’s what gets you “high”—and CBD products from hemp have to contain less than 0.3% THC.

If you buy quality CBD products from a reputable source, they will be pure and won’t contain THC, so you will not notice any psychoactive effects whatsoever. Try Herbal Health CBD for pure, high-quality CBD oils, gummies, capsules, and skincare products.

What Does It Do?

CBD has been approved by the FDA for use in medication for a specific type of epilepsy. Elsewhere, it is used by doctors in drugs that reduce muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis, and to alleviate nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.

Beyond that, there are numerous day-to-day uses of CBD products. Many of these have not been tested enough to provide concrete scientific evidence. However, there are huge swathes of anecdotal evidence suggesting that the benefits of CBD are real, numerous, and varying.

CBD is thought to reduce anxiety, provide pain relief, soothe aching muscles, and help with insomnia. It can also assist with migraine, arthritis or joint pain, and possibly even Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

Are There Side Effects?

As with most supplements and medicines, there are some side effects associated with CBD. The vast majority of these are minor: drowsiness, lack of alertness, change in appetite, and occasional nausea. Your primary concern if you are considering taking CBD should be its interaction with other medications. If you take medications that come with a “grapefruit warning,” the same warning may apply to CBD, and your medication may become less effective.

Make sure you talk to a doctor before you try CBD products (or any new supplement). Once you’ve got the go-ahead, you can discover the world of CBD and find out how it could benefit you.
