There is absolutely no doubt that the street tacos which you can find in Mexico are some of the best snacks that you can find anywhere in the country. In fact whenever I go south of the border I am always most excited to hit the taco stand and try out some fresh and delicious cuisine. With this being said however I have learned over the years that there are some things which you have to watch out for when you are buying tacos, and here is what those things are.
Picking The Stand
The street food here really is amazing but this is not to say that every single taco stand is going to deliver the highest quality experience. In fact there are some which just don’t make nice tacos and some which don’t even take care of their meat, meaning you could easily get sick. The best rule of thumb is go to the stand which has the most locals around it.
Careful With The Salsa
If you don’t want your head blown off then you really have to be careful when you put the salsa on your tacos. In some cases you get a really smooth and warm guacamole, in others you could have a habanero sauce which will blow your mind and your mouth. There is no rule as to which salsa is the hottest so be sure to have a little try before you add it to your taco.
Watching Out For Bones
The first time that I went for barbacoa, which is slow cooked mutton, I was really excited for the experience. My friend Javier Burillo knows all the best places so he took me to this great spot on a Sunday morning. What I hadn’t anticipated when I got the tacos however was that there may be bones inside the meat, and I almost cracked a tooth as a result. There is nobody to sue should this happen, and the reality is that you’d likely just get laughed at. With this in mind, always be careful when you are eating the taco, that there are no little bones inside waiting to chip away at that filling of yours.
Staying Quiet
If you approach a busy taco stand and you politely wait for them to call you out for your order, you will literally be waiting there all day. What you have to do is arrive, lean your head over others and shout out your order. If they don’t want to serve you because they are too busy then they won’t take your order, when the time comes they will then look and you can let them know exactly what you want. This is the accepted way of ordering tacos here in the city, and if you don’t do it then the person behind you most certainly will.
