How to keep your employees safe in a warehouse setting:

1. Make sure that you restrict the number of hours that your employees can work in a single shift

As employees are far more likely to make a potentially dangerous mistake when they are overworked and fatigued, it’s a great idea to restrict the numbers of hours that your employees can work in a single shift.

2. Ensure that your employees have the right training and certifications for their roles

As an example, all of your employees who operate heavy machinery in your warehouse such as a fork lift, should have completed certified forklift training. Furthermore each employee who operates heavy machinery in your warehouse should be retested on operating heavy machinery on a regular basis. Which should reduce the likelihood of accidents involving heavy machinery occurring in your warehouse.

3. Place heavier items on your bottom shelves

One way to prevent heavy items from toppling down off your shelves and potentially injury one of your employees is to make an effort to place heavy items on your bottom shelves and your lighter items, on your top shelves. That way if an item does slip from your top shelf, it will cause far less damage to anyone who happens to be standing beneath your shelf.

4. Make sure that your warehouse’s floor is kept clean and dry

Another way to prevent workplace accidents is to ensure that your warehouse’s floor is always kept clean and dry. Which should prevent your employees from slipping and falling, during their shifts.

5. Educate your staff members on ergonomic practices

To prevent your employees from developing injuries, it’s also a great idea to educate each of your warehouse works on practicing, safe ergonomic practices. As employees who work in warehouses often perform monotonous, repetitive tasks, which can lead to strains and sprains, if your employees don’t remember to take regular breaks from monotonous, repeated actions.

6. Make sure that any hazardous chemicals or hazards are marked as being potentially dangerous

As a business owner, it’s crucial to ensure that any hazardous chemicals which are stored in your warehouse are clearly marked, so that they are handled and stored properly.

7. Check all of your machines on a daily basis

Before your factory starts operating for the day, your staff members should inspect all of the machines in your warehouse, to ensure that they’re operating safely. If you follow this tip, you’ll also be able to repair your machines as soon as you find a fault in one of your machines, which could save your business a significant amount of money. You should also make sure you that if you buy a forklift for sale that it is from a reputable company who can also offer services if your machine needs repair.

8. Have an emergency plan in place

Also make sure that your warehouse has an established emergency plan in place.
