4 Tips For Learning To Play a Musical Instrument

December 29, 2019

Learning to play a new instrument is something that has many benefits for anyone of any age. It can not only be a fun pastime, but it allows an opportunity for you to step back and meditate as you play.

Although learning a new instrument can be a daunting task, particularly if you’ve never played any instrument before, it’s not something that has to overwhelm you. Picking up an instrument is as simple as practicing and staying consistent.

Most importantly, it’s all about choosing the right instrument for your personality type. You’ll be much more likely to stick to your commitment of playing an instrument if you like it. If you’re ready to get started learning, then take a look at some of the best tips.

Practice Every Day

Try to practice a little every day in order to get the most out of your time. You’re better off putting in at least a few minutes a day rather than not practicing at all for long periods.

Even if you feel frustrated about your progress, persevere until you get better. Although it may seem like you’re not getting anywhere, you are! Keep going, and don’t give up!

Get Inspired

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to find someone who inspires you. Strive to play as good as they do, and you’ll find that you’re much more driven to keep going when challenges arise.

If you don’t have anyone that you’re inspired by yet, start clicking around. After listening for long enough, you’ll find a few people that get you excited about getting to their level eventually.

Play In a Group

Playing with other musicians is an incredibly effective way to get better at your instrument. It’s especially helpful if you play with more advanced musicians. Once you’ve had a little time playing with people beyond your skill level, they’ll start to rub off on you!

If you don’t know any musicians that you could potentially play with, look into some jam groups or even music school. These kinds of environments will be a safe place for you to practice in a supportive group. Together, you can all take risks and grow together.

Be Fearless

Taking up a new instrument is about bringing more joy into your life. Although it may be terrifying to make mistakes or be laughed at, the idea is to find satisfaction in it!

Don’t allow your fear to hold you back from one of the greatest forms of self-expression that there is: music! Allow your heart to lead you and get out of your head. Getting yourself trapped in fear of judgment will only detract from your experience!
