3 Tips For Doing Major Home Renovations

February 4, 2020

While most homeowners know how to take on at least a few home improvement or repair projects, doing any type of major home renovation can be intimidating for even the most seasoned homeowner. Because of this, it’s wise to get some advice from the experts before you go taking on a big home improvement or repair project that you’ve never done before.

So to help you with this, here are three tips for doing major home renovations.

Work On A Timeline

For big projects, it’s easy to get behind on the work you wanted to get done. When this happens, your renovations can drag on and on without you finishing the project when you wanted to.

To keep this from happening while you take on your own home renovations, Meaghan O’Neill, a contributor to Architectural Digest, advises that you set up a timeline for when and how you’ll get all the work done that you need. This timeline should not only include which days you’re planning to complete certain parts of your project, but you should also jot down information about the decisions you’ll need to make along the process so you’re not having to take days off while you weigh your options.

By having all of these things planned out and prepared for before you even start renovating, you’ll have a much better chance of getting your project done in a timely manner and to your own specifications.

Know What You Can Do On Your Own

When taking on a home renovation project, there’s a good chance that you’ll need at least some type of help or guidance for part of your project.

To ensure that you don’t get in over your head and wind up causing more problems than the ones you were trying to fix, Melina GIllies, a contributor to Family Handyman, it’s important that you know your limits. For example, if you’re going to have to do anything that requires getting permits or has to do with the foundation of your home, you may want to just leave this work to licensed and experienced professionals.

Understand What Living At Home Will Entail

The actual renovations aren’t the only thing you’ll have to worry about when doing major home improvement projects. In addition to getting the work done, Kate Reggev, a contributor to Dwell.com, shares that you’ll also need to understand how you’ll live through the renovations.

If you can swing it, try to get out of the home as much as you can. This can be done by either only working on part of your home at a time or staying at a secondary location while things are under construction.

At least with certain constructions like a new roof or installing solar panels, you won’t be locked out of rooms in your home or living in a construction zone – all the construction on your home takes place outside. If you’re considering doing some major renovations on your home, use the tips mentioned above to help you plan and prepare for them.
